1. How might you prepare yourself for Jesus' birth into the world afresh? What messages from God would you like to hear to help you see Jesus more clearly in your life? Ask God in prayer for guidance regarding those yearnings.
Joseph has just decided to cast aside his pregnant fiance, but God has other plans. God's angel speaks to Joseph in a dream. "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins" (Matthew 1:20-21). Instead of letting Joseph go ahead with his plans, God offered Joseph His plan.

Advent continues [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with Christmas less than a week away. In Matthew 1:18-25, Joseph struggles with Mary's pregnancy and almost dismisses her, yet God has other plans. The following devotion includes four steps for reflection. Feel feel to broswe and use what works for you today.
Step 3: Reflection Questions on Matthew 1:18-25
2. Joseph's sacrifice for Mary and Jesus- raising a son he did not sire, letting go of his resentment, and accepting Mary despite the social stigma involved- make him a model of sacrificing for God's plan. What have you given up to be a Christian, and how can you identify with Joseph in letting go of feelings, people, and dreams that proved unhealthy or unrealistic in God's eyes?
God's angel is certainly busy -- telling Mary she will bear Jesus [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], telling the aged Zechariah, priest of the temple, that he and his wife will bear John the Baptist, and now telling Joseph about his future step-son and God's hope for that relationship.
Joseph nearly listens to voices that are not God's. He nearly casts Jesus aside. But the gift Joseph received from the dream is beyond Joseph's wildest dreams. God invited Joseph to prepare the world for Jesus. What an honor to name Jesus, raise him, and know Jesus' purpose, "to save his people from their sins" (Mattthew 1:21).
God of dreams and visions, thank you for your angels' messages to keep your believers on track with Your hopes for their lives. Guide all, like Joseph [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who are struggling with betrayal, that they might gain insight and hope for a future in the midst of shattered dreams. This Advent, bring all your beloved children, especially those hurting or angry, to peace in your son Jesus Christ. Amen.

"Being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, (he) planned to dismiss her quietly" (Matthew 1:19). Though he planned to dismiss Mary quietly, inside he may have not been quite as quiet. The scripture doesn't share how Joseph felt about his fiance being pregnant, but the fact that he was ready to cast her aside indicates that her pregnancy wounded his pride, standing in the community, and inner sense of justice.
This Advent season, as Jesus' birth nears, Joseph may not be the only one struggling to welcome Jesus. May all who seek salvation and life learn to let go of their resentments and fears to embrace life in Him. Amen.
Step 4: Closing Advent Prayer on Matthew 1:18-25 and Preparing for Jesus
Step 2: Enjoy the Following Reflection on Matthew 1:18-25, the "Angel and Joseph"
Joseph, like every human being before and since, has a choice. He can do what he wants to do, or he can follow God. Indeed, every believer is stuck in this bind -- doing what the world, or one's own sense of justice, screams is right, or doing what God invites one to do for new life.
Step 1: Read Matthew 1:18-25.
