Antisocial Personality in Children
Psychopath, Sociopath or Antisocial Personality
Latent or passive sociopaths –These individuals behave quite civilly most of the time by accepting guidance from sources they respect, for example, religion or the law, or else by attaching themselves to a strong
The term “sociopath” refers to an individual who suffers from antisocial personality disorder, yet the degree to which such a person is antisocial is usually quite extreme. In fact, according to Charles Zastrow, author of Social Problems: Issues and Solutions, unlike someone who is simply a recluse and prefers being alone, a sociopath lacks moral constraints to prevent him or her from doing “whatever is personally advantageous [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” regardless of who might be hurt or how much suffering those actions might cause.
Sociopathic Personality Disorder and Nature Versus Nurture
Sociopaths are socially defective, but as for what makes them this way, evidence suggests two possibilities:
Most sociopathic individuals are born lacking the ability to empathize or sympathize with not only other people but also any living creature, which is why some sociopaths delight in torturing animals. In some instances parents actually encourage aberrant behavior in a child, often in subtle ways, and when a child is raised in such an environment, he or she is “conditioned” to become a sociopathic personality. (Berne)Sociopathic Personality Disorder and Guilt
According to Dr. Martha Stout, author of The Sociopath Next Door (2005), "About one in twenty-five people are sociopaths, meaning, essentially [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they have no conscience," allowing them to do anything at all without experiencing any guilt (p. 9) Although sociopaths usually do not experience guilt when they commit acts that are deemed unacceptable by society, this does not mean, however, that they never experience guilt. Sociopathic personalities, in fact, have their own standards regarding what is acceptable behavior and what isn’t, although these standards tend to be quite selective.
In other words, a sociopath feels no sense of loyalty to other people, including parents or immediate community. Interestingly, however, such individuals do not seem to have any particular defect when it comes to communicating with others or in their ability to reason logically, but they do lack the ability to conduct themselves with decency, responsibility, and respect for the rights of other people and, in many cases, animals.
No matter how wrong their acts might seem to other people, sociopaths themselves do not see these acts as wrong. They do not experience feelings of guilt when they commit acts that society designates as immoral, inhumane, etc. (Berne)
As a result, sociopaths are capable of not only lying without remorse but also exploiting defenseless people; assaulting their own parents, spouses, and children; sexually abusing children; and killing in cold blood. Nevertheless, sociopathic individuals will often experience feelings of guilt in relation to far less reprehensible acts that seem wrong to them personally but not especially wrong to others, for example, throwing trash out a car window or failing to tithe in church.
Based upon studies in cognitive psychology, researchers have concluded there are two types of sociopathic personalities:
Sociopaths take pleasure in making other people suffer; and in many cases [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they seek gratification of their wishes regardless of the circumstances. They also hold other traits in common:
