Several fruitless years passed and the Earl’s money was on the verge of being withdrawn. Digging in Egypt takes place during the winter when it’s cool enough for outside work. Carnarvon gave Carter to the end of the 1922 season to find the tomb.
Thirteen years after King Tut’s name first appeared in Davis’ artifact pile, Carter broke through the plaster that hid the wonder of Tutankhamen’s final resting place. It was late November of 1922. The discovery of Tut’s grave in the Valley of the Kings remains one of the richest and intact tombs ever discovered. Carter made headlines across the globe. The discovery of Tutankhamen spurred new exploration of Egypt, inspired the Art Deco movement, improved archeological techniques and gave hope to the post war generation weary of strife and conflict.
Tutankhamen was a lover of fine things, enjoyed art and hunting. He contributed to Karnak and Luxor temples. It was a peaceful reign. At the tender age of 18 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Tut was dead. Whether from the hands of an enemy (or ally) or as the result of an accident, a broken leg and a piece of bone in his brain caused the demise of the king. Preceding royal Egyptians erased much Tut’s existence from the pages of history [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], scratching his name from temple walls and excluding him from kingship lines. Fortunately they left just enough to ensure
American tourist and wannabe archaeologist Theodore Davis (1837-1915) was the first to discover that the tomb of Tut-Ankh-Amun may exist. Items from the lost tomb appeared among other funerary objects Davis was considering for purchase. These stolen artifacts were marked with Tut’s seal. Tutankhamen’s name sparked the interest of Davis’s assistant Howard Carter (1874-1939). At the time Carter was a glorified copyist of Egyptian artifacts. He decided to research further the unfamiliar royal markings and name.

The story of King Tut’s tomb is one of intrigue [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], forgotten bloodlines and ancient curses. In November 1922, the young Egyptologist Howard Carter entered an underground chamber in Egypt’s famed Valley of the Kings. He looked around to discover he was standing in a room filled with golden treasures and the once lost remains of Ancient Egypt’s boy king.

Who was Tutankhamen?
Carter embarked on a long and passionate career in Egyptology and found a sponsor for his endeavors in the earl of Carnarvon. Carnarvon was a fan of ancient Egypt, had plenty of money to spare but lacked the physical ability to go searching for lost tombs. He partnered with the ambitious Carter who promised to find the tomb. Carter used his hands on education and the Earl’s money to launch a search of the Valley of the Kings.
The name “Tutankhamen” means living embodiment of Amun. Amun was the king of the Ancient Egyptian Gods. Tut took the name after he became ruler of Egypt in 1334 BCE. His original name was Tutankhaten. At just nine years old the already married Tut began a reign of nine years. He had guardians and overseers to aid him but they interfered and took over the running of his kingdom.
Carter's Archaeology and Discovery
Despite being robbed at least twice in ancient times, the cramped quarters of Tut’s tomb had been robbed twice in the past but was still filled with funerary objects, canopic jars, treasure chests, golden furniture, pottery, jewelry and chariots. It took over ten years to catalog the items most of which remain on display in Cairo’s Egyptian Museum.
