The Roman eagerness to defeat Hannibal led to them simply packing their legions together, more tightly than normal, and marching them forward in a single massive block to smash through the numerically smaller Carthaginian army. Hannibal moved his army forward in the echelon formation, with a weak centre, designed to give way under the Roman assault and retreat. He also ordered his cavalry to attack the Roman cavalry, which they did so successfully.
All Of Rome Unleashed
When the armies collided, the Roman block pushed the Carthaginian centre back, which led to the Carthaginian line creating a horseshoe shape. Hannibal then ordered his African infantry to attack the Roman flanks, in essence wrapping the Carthaginians around three sides of the Roman army.
Before this battle, the Romans had employed, under the Dictator Quintus Fabius Maximus, a rather successful tactic of simply avoiding Hannibal and cutting him off from the battles he so desperately needed to beat Rome (the Fabian strategy). However, once Quintus' dictatorship was over, the Roman leadership quickly reverted back to their impetuous ways.
The Roman numbers are broken down as follows. 40,000 Roman infantry, 40,000 allied infantry, approximately 2,000 – 3,000 Roman cavalry and 4,000 allied cavalry. With such a large army, the Romans were yet again filled with over confidence that would lead them into making quick and rash decisions.
On Course For Cannae
During the Second Punic War [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there were several major battles between Hannibal and the Romans. However, there were three battles that are discussed and studied more often than any others. These are the battles of Cannae, Lake Trasimene and Trebbia. These battles are studied more so than the others because of their importance in the war and because they display some of the most brilliant tactical maneurvers ever seen. In fact, some of the tactics and strategies employed in these battles by Hannibal had never been seen before, maximising their effectiveness and deadliness.
Leading the Roman army in this battle were the Consuls, Lucius Aemilius Paullus and Gaius Terentius Varro. The battle is considered one of the greatest tactical feats in military history [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and highlighted, for a third time, the incompetence of Rome's Generals and the difficulties of their shared command system. Having recovered from the disasters at Trebbia and Lake Trasimene, the Romans, quite remarkably for the time, managed to raise an army of approximately 87,000 Roman and allied troops.

The Cause of the Second Punic War
After successfully routing the Roman cavalry, the Carthaginian cavalry returned to smash into the Roman rear. The now surrounded Romans became even more tightly packed together, with some Romans not even able to lift their weapons. The Carthaginians pushed in on all sides, further compacting the massive Roman army, slaughtering them wher
The Carthaginian army numbered around 56,000, which included; 40,000 heavy infantry, 6 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 light infantry and 10,000 cavalry. It would be the superiority of Hannibal's cavalry, both in number and skill that would again prove vital in the upcoming battle.
This article discusses the battle of Cannae. The battle took place near the town of Cannae in Apulia in South-East Italy on August 2, 216BC. Cannae was the last of the three major battles of the Second Punic War and the worst for the Romans in terms of numbers of numbers killed. If ever there was any uncertainty over Hannibal's tactical genius, it is washed away here as Hannibal managed to completely wipe out a Roman army nearly twice as large as his own.
