Secondary characters, including Michael Caine's Alfred and Morgan Freeman's Lucius Fox, are similarly lost in the chaos. Neither of these great actors seem to have more than a dozen lines in film. However, on a postitve note, Batman Begins' Katie Holmes has been replaced by Maggie Gyllenhaal in the role of Rachel Dawes, and Gyllenhaal creates a compelling character out of a previously useless one.
In terms of the plot, the Joker’s various criminal acts set (and keep) the movie in motion. This poses something of a problem, as the movie is called The Dark Knight, not The Joker. And between the mayhem of the Joker and rise of Two-Face (played by a fantastic Aaron Eckhart), Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego Batman, played by Batman Begins' Christian Bale, get a little lost. Even when Bruce loses someone very close to him, almost no time is devoted to his reaction. This may be an attempt to show how jaded he has become (he is The Dark Knight after all) [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it could have been handled much better, especially when certain other characters are irrevocably damaged by the same death.

Early Reviews of The Dark Knight
When Dark Knight opened in theaters last Thursday, it was an immediate success. It has already broken box office records, raking in over $150 million on its first weekend from the U.S. theaters alone. And it continues to receive almost unanimously positive reviews from critics and viewers alike.
Ledger’s performance is indeed amazing, and may even earn him the posthumous Oscar nomination that has been buzzed about. Ledger is almost unrecognizable under the voice, mannerisms, and shuffling walk he maintains throughout the movie. In his hands, the Joker isn’t a money-grubbing gangster, nor is he a chortling madman. He is something scarier than either of these, and that is what helps to elevate Dark Knight above popcorn movie status. Under Christopher Nolan’s direction [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Joker wants to prove to the world that, without the system of checks and balances that keeps society moving [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], everything would fall apart -- think Tyler Durden of Fight Club with face paint and a homicidal streak.
In spite of any flaws, The Dark Knight is the best superhero movie to come out of Hollywood in years. It is smart, the acting is flawless, and its themes and characte
The drama started when Dark Knight star Heath Ledger died suddenly on January 22, 2008, at the age of 28. Fans immediately began to speculate, not only about the way Ledger died, but about the lengths to which he had gone for the sake of the film. Some claimed that Ledger had gone to such a dark mental place in preparation for his role as a mass murderer that he was never able to recover. They labeled his death, which involved a combination of anti-depressant and anti-anxiety drugs, as an attempt to outrun this darkness. (Dark Knight cast and crew members would later deny that Ledger had been anything but committed and professional on the set.) Further speculation arose about the outcome of the The Dark Knight but, fortunately, Ledger's scenes had already been shot.
Underdeveloped plot points and confusing cinematography also leave something to be desired; one fast-paced underground car chase is particularly difficult to enjoy because it's hard to tell who is in which vehicle. And the film's concluding moments make little sense, although they clearly are meant to set up the plot of the next Batman movie.

The Hype
So what about the movie behind the hype? Does it really live up to its reputation?

The answer is both yes and no.
