ebe Prince is the suicide victim's name. The upcoming 11th anniversary of the Columbine High School killing highly begs the question as to what accountability do students have for their treatment of other students? In the case of Phoebe Prince,Tiffany Cufflinks Fank Gehry, two students will be charged with statutory rape and violation of civil rights and the others will be charged with criminal harassment and violation of civil rights culminating in the death and suicide of the 15-year-old teen - allegedly two of the nine had sex with the teen and the harassment started after what was a short relationship that ended with one of them. Some of what occurred was repeated and severe verbal abuse, threatening text messages, assaults and threats of violence as well as vandalizing pictures with Phoebe being "etched out."
Unlike Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold of Columbine who attributed, in part, their mass murder to the treatment they received by some of the students they targeted, which ultimately ended in their own suicides, Prince took only her life in response to an intolerable if not traumatizing school environment. Despite personal responsibility for our own actions, a teen is particularly vulnerable to suicide in response to the ill-treatment by others. As such, much more care and attention is needed when a teen exhibits severe depression or despondency, substance abuse, anti-social or irregular behavior, which are just some of the early signs of potential suicidal tendencies. The ultimate result of parents and the school system, students included, doing nothing, arguably, is a "Columbine-like" incident or what has occurred at other schools throughout the country.
Though these nine teens face criminal charges, 2 being charged as adults and the other 7 as minors,Tiffany Engagement Rings, does not excuse the real issue of the potential for civil liability. As seen with the highly popularized Nick Hogan (son of Hulk Hogan) car accident case,Tiffany Heart Necklaces Use Practical And Sustaina, parents can incur significant civil liability for what is termed "lack of parental control" over their children, which falls under a tort theory often used when a minor commits a "civil wrong." For those unaware of the case, the Hogans were sued for "lack of parental control." The plaintiff's family argued that the Hogans' failure to exercise this duty left their son a victim of a serious car accident that could have been prevented if Nick Hogan was parented in such a fashion so as not to drive his car with excessive speeds; apparently, Hogan's son was a notorious fast-car and "drifting" enthusiast. In the case of Prince, the damages are loss of companionship from what could be considered a wrongful death case. In these cases the "intent to cause suicide" need not be present. It can be proven by showing a "proximate cause" or a foreseeable harm that resulted from even an unintentional act.
The civil torts system is designed not only to compensate victims and their families for a loss incurred because of either intentional or negligent acts,Are Atvs Safe, the public policy surrounding this area of law includes, among other things, the goal of deterring wrongful or careless conduct that is not necessarily "criminal." In asking what accountability teens have in dealing with their own mental health in preventing suicide and what parents likewise also have, another inescapable question is how society through the courts ought to exact justice through the civil system against those who contributed to a suicide? The fact that criminal penalties apply in the case of Prince, strengthens the case for a civil cause of action. In our ever litigious nation, there are some cases that society still values at a high premium such as when it comes to the loss of a loved one. A lawsuit is not always the answer, but in our "arsenal" to fight teen violence, or any violence, it is an integral part of trying to prevent further incidents like those involving Prince, not to mention providing some compensation to the families feeling the pain.
