“Recently my stepdaughter was at the end of an English course and the preceptor asked what she had next. When numbers was mentioned, the educator denoted that maths was a tough subject and not really what a human act English ought be studying.” This story from Professor Peter Main, manager of education and science at the Institute of Physics (IOP), points to the subsistence of a worryingly ancient opinion in British schools.
The prescience that ‘boys do maths and science,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and girls do humanities and arts’ is one that the most people would scoff at today, but research into the options chosen along boys and girls at 13 suggests that gender-stereotyping still exists in schools and is narrowing the career alternatives of thousands of teenagers.
Worryingly, recent tests have shown that that teenage girls in Britain are lagging beyond behind boys in science than anywhere else in the Western World. A study of 57 nations by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) analysed the results of tests taken by nigh 20 million 15-year-olds. It base that boys in Britain were 10 points first and foremost girls in science, a bigger margin than maximum of the participating countries, individually from Indonesia and Chile.
In the UK, girls are onward of boys in the Double Award because science, yet this is due to the popularity of biology and chemistry. It’s physics namely appears apt be the problem. Since the 1980s, the numbers of pupils choosing apt learn physics has fallen from 45,000 to 29,000 and girls, of special note, are gravitating towards additional subjects.
The long-term efficacy of this brain-drain could be mysterious, for Professor Main makes explicit when he asks, “Where are the engineers of the hereafter to get down to?”
“When you look by the challenges we face, from air change and stamina security to one ageing population… we need extra of the afterward generation of educate and campus leavers to be scientifically exercised,” says Professor Main.
The brain drain conundrum
There are those educationalists who would propound the methodology that girls’ and boys’ heads are hardwired differently and accordingly boys indeed gravitate towards blowing things up or dismantling engines and putting them back together afresh. If this is so, why are girls lagging behind in science in the UK and the problem is not so keen elsewhere? It’s a conundrum that is baffling scientists,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ironically.
There’s a plethora of government-backed schemes to usher girls into science
