It is this experience of nature as culture that forms the basis of a new vision for the National Parks of Canada. According to Kathleen Harris in her article, "Canada's Exquisite Jewel," Parks Canada has "ramped up" its delivery of a new vision - the protection of national parks for Canadians by developing them as sites for wilderness travel or arctic tours geared for research scientists,Supra Pilot, wilderness afficionados, eco-tourists or simply folks looking for ways to reconnect spiritually with nature.
This, in itself, is a remarkable change from the Canadian policy from 1953-55 which relocated the Inuit population from their homeland in Nunavik, northern Quebec to Resolute and Grise Fiord in the High Arctic, where many faced starvation under unfamiliar and hostile conditions.
Writer Wilfred E. Richard,Supra Assault NS, who has made a case study of the Canadian Arctic territory of Nunavut, claims that Arctic tours to areas like Torngat Mountains, Thor Peak in Auyuittuq National Park can serve a reciprocal purpose by providing economic benefits to the Inuit population and spiritual benefits to people from the industrial world "who have lost much of [their] spiritual bearings connecting [them] to the land."
An Arctic tour was what writer and musician Paul Quarrington decided to take when he was given a stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis in May 2009. He made his way to Torngat Mountains, located at the northern extremity of the Labrador Coast. There he made peace with his illness and impending death.
While mining has opened up a stream of income for the population in Nunavut,Supra Sneakers, it is also a
Quarrington's experience is not an isolated one. Visitors to Torngat have remarked frequently on the exquisite sense of spirituality emanating from the mountains shrouded in clouds and vibrating with wind sounds.

A New Vision is in Place for Parks Canada
Richard, an avid wilderness traveler himself, states that the experience of the Arctic is a form of ecotherapy because it brings an individual back to his/her wilderness instincts; the wilderness, he claims, resuscitates the "wild within us."
In 1989, the Canadian government relented by helping the Inuit return south. This is followed in 1993 by the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act and the Nunavut Act which established the territory of Nunavut, comprising a major portion of northern Canada and most of the Canadian Arctic archipelago as the semi-autonomous homeland of the Inuit people.
Implicit in this concept is the position of the Inuit as educators and stewards sharing their indigenous wisdom and skills, their deep understanding of the land with people from the industrialized world.
In this sense, the Arctic tour revisits the ideas of 19th Century American Transcendentalists who viewed the wilderness as a source of inspiration and a cure for the spiritual malaise that plagues the industrialized world.
Echoing Thoreau, Richard states that the Arctic wilderness makes us whole because we are once more in a place where nature and culture are not separated, but one and the same.
What Quarrington found in this enchanted yet austere wilderness was an awakening to zero point and a desire to interact with the Arctic landscape in the "broadest, most spiritual sense." For the remaining six months of his life,Supra Dixon, he focused on two things – singing and spiritual mountain climbing.
