Martin Luther uses his catechism to instruct people in the basics of the Christian faith. He adds some of the prayers he has written as examples of how to pray. He places the burden for teaching the skill of praying on to the head of the household. The instructions he gives with the prayers are tools which can still be used today.
Luther never under estimates the power of the evil foe. He needs additional help to defeat the devil in this new day, so he asks for an angel to provide that help. Luther can pray with the confidence of all Christians. He will have that help, he will stay firm in his faith, and will serve God throughout the day. He ends with amen. In the vernacular of today that mean "you go God!" or a more traditional "it shall be so."
Martin Luther begins his morning prayer by addressing his God. He thanks God for being kept safe through the night. Now a new day has begun, and Luther is petitioning God to keep him safe throughout the day. He knows that protection is needed not only to keep him physically safe, but spiritually safe as well. Sin will provide direct injury and the context of evil is often seeking to pull people into an ungodly life. He focuses on his needs to do what is God-pleasing in his action but also in the complete context of his life. Luther daily gives his life over to God, physically, spiritually and as all things work together.

Martin Luther's Morning Prayer
Following the prayer, the instructions continue. Go to work joyfully. The constant life of prayer and praise continue with the instructions go to work singing a hymn. Martin Luther also instructed the head of the household on meal time prayers. He closed his day with an evening prayer.
"I thank you, my heavenly Father through Jesus Christ, your dear son [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that you would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into your hands I commend myself, my body and soul and all things. Let they holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen"
His instructions include that prayer should begin the day. The sign of the cross is to be made as a reminder of baptism. The waters of baptism serve as a daily symbol of the need to consciously drown sinful natures and accept the new nature for a forgiven servant of God. In making the sign of the cross, the name of the triune God should be spoken, further reminds people that they are redeemed. For that is the name in which to pray. Then [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the position taken is either, kneeling or standing [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], shows humility before the God that is confessed in the statement of personal belief as recorded in one of the creeds. Saying the Lord's Prayer begins this act of worship. Next, Martin Luther's Morning Prayer:
