The beauty of this garment is that it can be the perfect canvas for accessories, or it can be a simple statement all by itself. Go to this Redbook article for some ideas on how to wear this versatile "Radical Roots of the Little Black Dress: A History, in Pictures" by Erika KawalekElizaMagazine.com, "Coco and the Little Black Dress" by Margaret EvertonFashion-Schools.org, "The History of the Little Black Dress" by Julie Moore
Now, it's the dress you can wear for any occasion, from a cocktail party to a dinner date to a wedding [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but that wasn't always the case.
By the early 1900s, black was still the choice for maids and those in mourning. Fashionable women of the time still, like the women of Franque's time, chose pastels. They wore sparkling dresses, stiff collars [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and corsets; simple and comfortable just wasn't in style.
Chanel's Little Black Dress
In 1926, Chanel debuted the first LBD. It was sleek, simple, and a little daring, fitting in perfectly with the mood of the roaring '20s. The October 1, 1926 issue of Vogue showcased the dress, dubbing it the "Ford" after the popular car company. A caption in the magazine called the dress, "The frock that all the world will wear." That statement couldn't have been more true.
Black was once the chosen clothing color for clergymen, nuns, maids, and those in mourning. However, Lucile Franque, an 18th-century Parisian painter, chose to dress in the drab color instead of the popular pastels of the time. Franque was a rebel of sorts, spending time with a gang of artsy men called the Barbus, meaning "bearded ones." The daring women who associated with this group donned black, wore veils, and adorned their heads with flowered wreaths. Black clothing at this time was a paradox of sorts; it was at once the choice for those who wished to blend in and those who wished to stand out.
Chanel, however, preferred clothes to be refined and easy-to-wear, so she chose to work with comfortable fabrics, such as jersey, and neutral colors. She had a distaste for the opulent, stuffy clothing she saw her peers wearing [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and instead chose to wear open collars and forget the rib-breaking corset. She said, “People laughed at the way I dressed, but that was the secret of my success. I didn’t look like anyone.” The fashion legend is also quoted as saying, "Luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury." And with this philosophy, the LBD was born.
The Early History of the Little Black Dress
Imagine a closet without this effortless, chic, go-to-staple: the Little Black Dress (LBD). Fashionistas and the fashion-clueless alike benefit from this simple, classic garment, and we all have legendary designer Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel to thank.
