re are many challenges faced by those who are becoming managers for the first time. A lot of times, managers fail to understand the big differences between their role (servant leaders) and the role of the people that work under them.
The first challenge a new manager will face is that being a formal leader is different from being an informal leader. What is the difference you may ask? A formal, or imposed leader, is someone who is recognized as being the leader in title. This leader is imposed because not everyone has a say in who gets the role. An informal, or natural leader, will be recognized by co-workers as someone they can go to with a problem. The simplest kind is the guy in the office who steps up to solve a problem simply to help out. There is no deliberate process for the natural leader to become a leader [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nor are there any formal trappings of authority. But the others recognize that he or she is someone in charge.
The formal leader needs to remember that just because he or she has the authority to give orders doesn't mean that employees are going to stick to the spirit of the order. This can make it very difficult for a manager to be able to accomplish any of his/her goals.
Regardless of how managers rise to power, the strength of their leadership plays a huge role in their success. The personality and training of the new manager will influence how he or she wields new found authority. Many times [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you will hear the phrase "the power has gone to his/her head" when describing certain managers. This is because "The Boss" often feels that he/she has much more at stake and therefore a lot more to lose. Stress levels will increase dramatically when there is more at stake, which can have an adverse effect on someone's management style. Often times, people will go with what has worked for them in the past [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but since management takes place in a ever-changing environment, those techniques are often ineffective.
Effective leaders can be open and straightforward, or maneuvering and sneaky. The aboveboard leader makes it clear as to what he or she wants and asks for it up front. This leader makes his or her expectations very clear. The benefit to this style is that everyone knows exactly where the leader stands, and has a positive effect on organizational culture.
The chess-playing, or maneuvering leader views everybody, whether a subordinate or a peer, as a piece on the chessboard. He may tell some people his plan, but use others as a blocking mechanism to set up his next move. The chess player will insulate himself with valuable pieces to protect him- or herself.
There are many challenges new managers will face as they step into the role of a leader. As long as you have a good understanding of interpersonal dynamics, as well as your own leadership styles, you follow your own personal strengths and remain authentic, you can become a successful manager.
