Dust Mites Love Bedrooms
Poor quality mattresses are made from synthetic foam [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which can contain formaldehyde and other potentially toxic substances. The chemicals in these mattresses can leach out in vapour form many years after manufacture, and are often the cause of allergic reactions, breathing difficulties, headaches and sleep disturbances, seriously affecting the quality of sleep.

The average bedroom is crammed with hidden dangers which can adversely affect our health. If any member of the family is asthmatic, or is affected by sneezing, coughing or itchy eyes, this is a cause for concern. An important factor is to keep the bedroom free from harmful chemicals, such as those contained in the materials used to make furniture, synthetic carpets, or VOCs (volatile organic compounds) which are released from the paint on the walls.
Use natural substances such as lavender to prevent insect damage to clothes in wardrobes. After dry-cleaning hang clothes out to air in a well-ventilated area for a few days before placing back in the home or wardrobe. Ideally, try to find a dry-cleaner who uses steam instead of solvents.
Built-in wardrobes are usually made from MDF (medium density fibreboard) which emits chemical vapours. Check with your carpenter or supplier before agreeing to have any work done. Ask them to choose natural wood or formaldehyde-free MDF instead.
Laminate flooring is often a major source of formaldehyde and anyone with a health issue or small children may want to test the formaldehyde concentration in the bedroom. There are companies that can carry out these checks for a small fee. Look for laminate flooring products with low VOC emission levels.
Cotton, linen and flannelette sheets can also be laden with chemicals from bleaching, dyeing and fireproofing. Try to source unbleached, organic cotton which has not been dyed, or linen sheets and bedding. Wash all bed linen thoroughly before use to get rid of chemicals and launder weekly at 60 degrees to kill dust mites.

The bedroom can impart a real sense of well being. But too often many of us do not get it right in the room which we will spend over a third of our lives in bed.
Eco Tips for a Healthy BedLook for chemical-free mattresses or those filled with natural materials such as coir, latex, cotton or pure new wool.Make sure the cover is also made with natural materials. Use an anti-dust mite cover and wash regularly.Choose a slatted bed base, as these encourage movement of air underneath the mattress and discourages dust mites. It is important to replace your bed every eight to ten years. Old mattresses lose their shape [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leading to back problems and disturbed sleep.Shopping and Caring for Bedding
House dust mites and synthetic chemicals and dyes used in bedding also cause problems. Many people are intolerant to dyes or synthetic fibres [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially eczema sufferers. Avoid “non-iron” fabrics – these are usually treated with formaldehyde which causes skin irritation.
Dust is a common allergy so think of ways to avoid it collecting in the bedroom. Cluttered and over-filled bedrooms are a potential trigger. Keep surfaces clear as much as possible.
Choose duvets and pillows made with natural fibres such as cotton, wool, feathers, or other natural fillings which breathe better than synthetic substances and are kinder to the environment.
