With the September 2008 passing of Bata shoe mogul, Thomas Bata just two weeks shy of his ninety-fourth birthday, this is an appropriate time to highlight the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Canada. Having fled to Canada in 1939, Bata lived and ran his shoe manufacturing empire in Toronto, Ontario. Inspired by his wife and founding chairman of the museum,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Sonja, the couple decided to keep the heritage of shoes alive by building the world’s largest and most renown shoe museum.
Over twelve thousand pairs of shoes are cataloged in the massive four-storey building that includes four distinct galleries, one of which is called “All About Shoes”. The impressive display includes forty-five hundred years of shoes such as Chinese bound foot shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ancient Egyptian sandals, chestnut-crushing clogs, glamorous platforms, and celebrity shoes. In addition, the other three galleries house shoes from rotating exhibits allowing the public to return regularly and see new displays.
The History of Western Fashion includes eras from the Ancient World and Medieval Times right up to the twentieth century. A pretty pair of silk evening boots from around 1914 France has actually come back into style as many women today are seen wearing retro styles. One of the pairs of shoes from Italy around the year 1720 is a gorgeous silk high heel with embroidery.
