Airlines have found a big new revenue source by requiring travelers to pay for checked luggage. The fees also are a new item airlines can use in promotions. A recent Delta deal with American Express offers to allow a first checked bag free for up to nine persons in the same reservation on every Delta flight. The offer is for those who get a Gold Delta Sky Miles credit card from American Express.
The Rick Steves bag is just over 7 pounds and is priced at $140. It is also expandable, adding “an extra 2 inches of cargo depth.” However, when expanded it is “fatter” than the carry-on limit, according to the Rick Steves website.
Meanwhile, Spirit Airlines has raised the hackles of fliers by announcing it will charge for carry-on bags that do not fit under a seat. As of this writing, no other carrier has followed Spirit’s lead. Southwest Airlines is the largest airline that still does not charge for checked bags. Many airlines also charge less for checked bag fees that are paid in advance online.
Size Zero Carry-on Only 5+ Pounds
According to the Antlers spokeswoman, the company is the top-selling brand in Britain [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The Size Zero line also includes a 30-inch bag with the suggested retail price of $240. Since the “standard airline weight max is 50 lbs. per bag” she says, and ordinary 30-inch versions can weigh up to 14 pounds when empty, the Near Zero larger bag permits travelers to pack much more for a longer vacation.

The British firm Antlers has introduced what it calls “pinky-weight” luggage in North America . Like travel guru Rick Steves’s lightweight rolling bags and those of several other manufacturers [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they are geared to appeal to everyone.
But they can be especially useful for thrifty older traveler who can travel light and who doesn’t want to pay the increasing extra fees that airlines have instituted for checked baggage.
Antler's top-tier Size Zero line includes a 22-inch carry-on bag that weighs only 5.3 pounds, as well as larger bags that are similarly light. “Size Zero won't crumple like a paper airplane when it's buried on the bottom of a baggage pile-up,” boasts the company in a press release. “The secret: Antler's patented flexible frame and corner protection system, a crush-proof, squish-proof engineering marvel.”
