The castle was built in 1093 by Bernard de Neufmarche and was originally a motte and bailey structure. Its position next to the River Usk made it of strategic importance where defence was concerned and eventually the castle was strengthened,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leading it to become the seat of the Lords of Brecon. The castle became a stone structure which was added to over the next two hundred years, the remains of which can still be seen today.
The death of the last lord in the de Braose family – William de Braose – saw his lands divided among his four daughters and their husbands, with Brecon castle coming into the possession of Humphrey de Bohun. By the end of the fourteenth century it was back in the hands of the royal family,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who passed it to the Stafford family in the fifteenth century, although they were the last Lords of Brecon.

The mid-sixteenth century saw the castle in a state of disrepair and over the next two centuries the castle gradually ceased to be of use as a fortification, although some parts – such as the chapel – remained in use for some time. The nearby college has a medieval hall which dates back to Norman times and was used by the residents of the Castle.

When Bernard de Neufmarche died the estates passed to his daughter Sybil,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was the wife of the Earl of Hereford. The lands became part of the estate of the de Braose family and remained so for over a hundred years, becoming part of an estate which included Hay on Wye and Abergavenny.
Henry Stafford was also the Duke of Buckingham and after a disagreement with King Richard III, he retired to Brecon Castle to begin plotting against him. His uprising failed and the King had him executed although his allies successfully joined with the future Henry VII to defeat Richard at the Battle of Bosworth. The next Duke of Buckingham was also executed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this time by the Tudors, after boasting of his claim to the throne. This led to Brecon once again failing under royal control.

In the nineteenth century the Morgan family from South Wales began to renovate the house situated next to the castle at considerable expense. This building became the present Castle Hotel. Visitors to Brecon can tour the still impressive ruins and take in other parts of the town which date back to the same era.
