Others thought they were malevolent ,bringing misery, injury and death to those who doubted their powers or didn’t believe in them. It's said the Tommyknockers often played practical jokes and committed mischief, such as stealing tools and food. The Tommyknockers are said to have arrived in the United States in the 1820s when Cornish miners immigrated to work in the Pennsylvania coal mines.
Some miners regarded them as good luck charms, believing they were benevolent, warning of cave-ins and other imminent disasters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while leading them to rich ore lodes.
Tommyknockers are Cornish gnomes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], earth spirits, who live underground and knock on mines’ walls. Some postulate their origin has roots in old Welsh mythology, in which they might have been the pre-Brythonic inhabitants of the Celtic lands who were skilled in the arts of mining and tunneling and that they taught their expertise to the Cornish.

Tommyknockers were approximately two feet tall, often described as greenish in color. They resembled men and often wore miner’s clothes. Tommyknockers performed many mining duties and worked with the men. They were also blamed for pranks.
The Tommyknockers’ presence was known to be overwhelmingly malevolent in some mines which were forced to shut down due to the miners’ fear of the gnomes.
