London activities for kids can be pretty expensive. A joint family ticket for three of the capital's big attractions, the Aquarium, the London Dungeons and Madame Tussauds, can set a poor parent back nearly £300! Luckily, there are plenty of ways to pass a Sunday without emptying your bank balance.
Past The Eye there are all manner of street entertainers to keep the little ones amused. There's also a carousel if you have a few quid to spend. Often there will be a festival of some sort [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so stalls and crafts may be around too.
Next comes the Festival Hall. Children's activities in London can be pretty complicated, but the Festival Hall keeps it simple. Turn up on a Sunday afternoon for a safe, friendly environment of big spaces for the kids to run about and make new friends in. The Hall often has extra attractions. Recently there's been a free disco for toddlers [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a small library for kids to explore and sets of large soft-furnished building blocks to play with. Enjoy a latte while the kids wear themselves out.
Finally, keep walking all the way down to Tate Modern. The Turbine Hall installation is always fascinating for kids and adults alike, as well as being free. At the time of writing, it's a giant black box - ideal for spooking the kids! The free galleries are great fun and a perfect way to encourage your child's creativity.
Free Kids Days Out in London – The Southbank
The Imperial War Museum is equally fascinating - check out their website first because there are often family events at no extra charge, such as memories of the Home Front during World War Two. Until October 2010 there's also a terrific 'Terrible Trenches' exhibition, which isn't free, but a family can get in for a very reasonable £13.
The National Portrait Gallery often runs family activities with no cost attached. These include storytelling sessions, films, opportunities to make art, and even dressing up activities related to the current special exhibitions.
A short walk takes you to BFI Southbank (formerly the National Film Theatre). There are always great things to do with kids here, whether it's workshops or family films (including mother and toddler screenings), but there are free activities too. Visit the Mediatheque and get access to all kinds of archive films and TV shows for no cash at all. Show the kids a few classic children's shows – The Clangers, Bagpuss, whatever. Brilliant for a rainy day.
Alternatively, consider the V&A Museum, which has started a 'Drop-In Design' programme. This runs every Sunday and often throughout school holidays. Kids are encouraged to explore the museum and then get creative themselves. They might be challenged t
It's so easy to make a whole whole day out of strolling by the Thames. Start just beyond the London Eye and watch the kids scream at the horror movie victims outside the London Film Museum.
The Bank of England Museum is free for all and makes an unusual day out. Feel the weight of a genuine gold bar and let the kids gawk at the revolvers, swords and muskets that were once used to keep prospective robbers at bay.

The RAF Museum is a bit of a trek from the centre, but it isn't too far from Colindale tube station. The highlight for kids will be the Aeronauts Interactive area [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where they can get hands-on experience with all aspects of flying. See if their gaming skills have prepared them to be a top fighter pilot!
