The movie drags at times and never really goes anywhere apart from where you expect it to but it does show some insights into suicide and has some moments of poignancy for the person with the intent of putting an end to their life. In an ironic twist, Wilbur saves one such soul from certain death in icy waters.

Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself -- The Actors
Wilbur wants to kill himself but is reluctant to make it permanent. He swallows every pill he can lay his hands on and sits next to the gas oven. The gas runs out and he has to rifle through his pockets to find a coin to recharge it and returns to await his fate. It would seem the biggest question to answer in this movie is, does Wilbur really want to kill himself or is he seeking help so that he has a reason to live?
The film is directed by Lone Scherfig as a compelling drama with shades of dry wit. The touches of humour bring a serious subject to the screen for the audience to ponder on the lighter side of death and dying. The dialogue is difficult to follow unless you are comfortable or very familiar with the broad accents of the Scottish actors.
Wilbur joins the ranks of the suicide attempt survivors and starts to talk. Turns out Wilbur’s problems stem from his mother’s death. When he’s told he can’t come to the suicide group any more [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the doctor is apologetic given that now he has actually experienced death. In an unexpected turn his brother faces a life threatening illness. Recovering in hospital, Harbour’s doing quite nicely and Wilbur’s doing his wife.
Jamie Sives tackles the role of Wilbur with believability while Adrian Rawlins takes on the responsible brother. Shirley Henderson shows strong acting skills in her portrayal of Alice and Lisa McKinlay could easily be her real daughter. Julia Davis wants to help Wilbur beyond her duties as a psychiatric nurse giving another complexity to his dilemmas.
Does Wilbur know that if he succeeds [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], death will be permanent? In those last moments he makes the phone call and the cry of help to his brother Harbour thereby telling us that he doesn’t really want that much permanency. On his brother’s wedding night he once again attempts suicide but this time with bloody wrists in the bath tub and is saved again thanks to the new sister in law [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Alice.
