The hype and fervour over Myths of the Near Future had all but faded by last year, but the band were not ready to release album number two because it had been deemed ‘too experimental to release’ by their record label Polydor.

Admittedly on first listen Flashover sounds as if it should have stayed on the cutting room floor, but with the song on repeat the urgency of it frenetic energy becomes infectious and saves it from becoming an also-ran. First single proper Echoes is more digestible for mainstream radio stations but is no Golden Skans.

The band scurrying to re-record the album with not their first [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], second but third producer in a year brought the album to completion by last February with Ross Robinson at the helm.

The albums eponymous single features lead singer Win Butler in falsetto mode [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whereas the accompanying a-side Month of May showcases a new rock side to the band.

The albums that are held with most affection are often soundtracks to peoples’ lives. Summer is no different, so whether it’s at work, college or at the home it’s always a benefit having that one album which sums up the mood. The three albums here are all going to be in demand for different reasons. It’s been three years since both Arcade Fire and Klaxons released an album, and both are highly anticipated whilst The Drums are the indie band of the year so far and their debut album is already receiving excellent reviews.
On the evidence from the four songs circling the internet, Arcade Fire have not slipped up on their third effort, but rather produced an album to match their previous works; Funeral from 2004 and Neon Bible from 2007.
The Drums have recently supported Kings of Leon at their Hyde Park show, as well as playing Glastonbury festival for the first time. The Drums’ debut is out now on Island Records.
[b]Arcade Fire, The Suburbs [/b]
Already released but a must for the summer months, The Drums’ self-titled debut captivates [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], enthrals, and above all makes a case for all indie pop purveyors to rekindle the sounds of old. The album does owe a lot to bands previous, especially sixties sunshine pop and indie greats of the eighties, The Cure and The Smiths et al. But do not hesitate to buy because this is a must-have; a contender for album of the year. E.P favourite Let’s go Surfing with its whistle-gum pop is included along with singles Best Friend, Forever and Ever Amen and the upcoming single It will all end in tears.
Surfing the Void is set to be released on the 23rd August, with the single Echoes released on the 16th of the same month.
The Canadians’ third album is due out on the 3rd August in North America and the 2nd August in the UK respectively. Whilst double a-side single The Suburbs and Month of May is out now and Ready to Start and We used to Wait are available for streaming.
The three albums here previewed and summarised are all great contenders for album of the summer, but sure there are a few more that need a mention: Kele’s The Boxer, Mystery Jets’ Serotonin and Bombay Bicycle Club’s Flaws. But the three mentioned above in summary are the bigger stories: Arcade Fire are on the brink of mainstream adulation, Klaxons may swamp themselves under pressure and produce a dud album and The Drums, although pinching sounds of old do create some great melodies.
