Competitions are on offer for most disciplines of folk music and song and these well attended contests are always worth listening to. Border ballads and traditional singing, dialect poetry, ceilidh bands [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], song and tune writing, fiddle, bagpipes and much more are on offer. Visitors can buy competition ticket that allows them entry to listen to all the different disciplines. Doing the rounds of these afternoon events give a good cross-section of the traditional music that is on offer here. There is also an eclectic mix of country [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bluegrass [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], roots and world music thrown in for good measure at the sessions throughout the village. Late night singing ceilidhs and dances also add to the mix of entertainment on offer.
Newcastleton is a purpose built weavers’ village constructed on a meadow by the river Liddel. As the name suggests it replaced an earlier village further up river. The meadow or holm that Newcastleton was built on was called Copshawholm and this is name is still used by local people today or sometimes they just shorten it further to just The Holm. During the festival weekend the village population doubles as revellers from both sides of the border gather to make merry with their music and songs. The holm is in the heart of ancient border reivers country and it is appropriate that the songs of these cattle rustlers of old are still sung at Newcastleton. These songs demonstrate the deeds of daring do that once happened along this once fragile frontier.
Nowadays at this festival there may be some friendly cross-border rivalry but this is played out now with music or song rather than with a lance or sword. Scottish ballad singers vie with English singing foxhunting or drinking songs. Border and Northumbrian fiddle tunes intermingle with one another and the Highland and Northumbrian bagpipes both play tunes from their respective cultures and beyond. Irish music and song is also much to the fore here a reels and gigs can be heard trough out the village. Accordion bands hold court in several venues and the chance of an impromptu dance is always in the offing.
Usually major folk festivals attract headline names and tickets for such events can be costly. One festival in the heartland of the Scottish Borders seem to buck that trend and the only booked artistes there are the bands for the ceilidh dances held on Friday and Saturday nights. Everybody else just turns up to enjoy the atmosphere of one of Britain’s longest established traditional music weekends. Newcastleton Traditional Music Festival embodies the best of folk music from both sides of the English/Scottish borderline. Early July each year heralds the arrival of hundreds of folk aficionados for a weekend of musical fun and games.
