Italian food is one of the most beloved and famous all over the world. Some of the Italian recipes are served in restaurants literally everywhere, like pizza and pasta [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with an infinite number of variations according to the local taste and traditions. One of the reasons why the Italian food is so diffused is the history of Italian emigration both during the 19th century and shortly after the Second World War, when millions of Italians left their home country to seek fortune elsewhere, but were not prepared to leave their food behind and decided instead to export it with them. Through time [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], these authentic Italian dishes evolved to please the local taste and new recipes were created, like for example the Chicago-style deep dish pizza [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], invented by some Italian immigrant but 100% American. Often many of these inventions are still labeled as "authentic Italian", even though you would have a hard time finding them in Italy.
(Un)Authentic Italian Recipe n.5: Marinara Sauce
The 5 Most Famous (Un)Authentic Italian Recipes(Un)Authentic Italian Recipe n.1 : Alfredo Sauce
If you ordered a marinara in Italy you would probably get some kind of seafood based sauce. The word "marinara" in fact means literally "of the sea" . The american marinara sauce probably derives from the tomato sauce used as a base for the seafood pasta.
A common appetizer in Italy is "bruschetta" : a slice of bread grilled on the fire or in the brick oven, lightly smeared with a clove of garlic and sprinkled with extra-virgin olive oil. This light and tasty appetizer was transformed in the U.S. into something that would be considered way too "garlicky" and heavy in Italy
This sauce is said to derive from a recipe invented by a roman chef in 1914. The original recipe included only butter and Parmesan cheese over fettuccine, while the american Alfredo sauce is a triumph of cream and herbs, that you wouldn't find in any Italian restaurant or home.
(Un)Authentic Italian Recipe n.2: Pepperoni
(Un)Authentic Italian Recipe n.4: Spaghetti With Meatballs
(Un)Authentic Italian Recipe n.3: Garlic Bread
The Italian word "Peperoni" just means peppers. While there are many kinds of spicy sausages and salami in Italy none tastes exactly like the american pepperoni and moreover most of the Italians don't like to put salami on their pizza.
Even though you could find both the spaghetti and the meatballs in an Italian home, they are usually served separate. In Italy it is tradition to have a first course of pasta and a second course of meat. Serving them in a single dish probably was an invention of the Italian immigrant workers who had to pack their lunch in a lunch pail and could not afford the luxury of separating the two courses like they were used to do at home.
