After a successful Harry Potter exhibit [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Centre next month will host Mythic Creatures: Dragons, Unicorns, and Mermaids, tracing the natural and cultural roots of some of the world's most enduring mythological creatures. As with other exhibits [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this one includes specimens from other museums, including New York's American Museum of Natural History.
Prospective visitors can take a virtual tour on the Centre's web site to discover the presentations most likely to interest them. They will be shown, for example, that the front yard will enable them to play music on a water fountain and navigate a water maze. A KidsPark, founded on the concept of learn-through-play [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], enables the eight-and-under cohort to perform music in a mini-studio and practice math skills in a supermarket.
With a staff of more than 250, including scientific specialists, the museum rents some of its traveling exhibits to private groups and also helps interested parties to fabricate scientific exhibits of their own. The staff even invites students to collaborate in some of their research. A summer camp for kids is a popular annual feature.
Approaching its 40th anniversary, the Ontario Science Centre enhanced its reputation for constant innovation with a $47.5 million renovation completed in 2007. When the anniversary arrived in 2009, the Centre had logged over 40 million visitors, an impressive average of a miilion a year, especially for a location off the beaten track for the world's tourists.
The Centre, conveniently located in the heart of Toronto, Canada's financial and commercial capital, near a major expressway and public transit, won early fame as one of the world's first interactive science museums. Its more recent highlights have included Facing Mars: Would You Survive the Journey? and Body Worlds and the Story of the Heart. The Mars project focuses on the challenges of sending humans to Mars, said to be on NASA"s long-range agenda, while the second-generation body exhibition illuminates up-to-the-minute health and disease issues with over 200 human specimens.

At the more mature end of the spectrum, the new Weston Family Innovation Centre provides facilities for studying and debating contemporary science-related issues with fellow visitors and with scientists around the world. Space Hall includes a planetarium, a guided tour of the solar system, actual rocks from the moon and Mars, a meteorite collection, a cloud chamber, and an opportunity to pilot a rocket chair. A state-of-the-art IMAX theatre currently features the unique and Spectacular views from the Hubble Space Telescope.
