Australian Environment Minister Tony Burke on Friday described Denmark's decision to cancel imports of hazardous chemical waste from Australia for disposal as "unfortunate".
Approved in August but postponed by Denmark earlier this month [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], shipments of 6 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],100 tonnes of highly toxic hexachlorobenzene (HCB) have now been canceled by the Danish government following political opposition. The chemical company Orica has been accumulating the by-product of solvents in Sydney of Australia since the 1960s.
According to Burke, his Danish counterpart Karen Ellemann told him that the decision was not because of environmental problems but the result of political opposition.
"She informed me that the political situation and debate in Denmark ... regrettably has led to the political conclusion that the shipment should not proceed," he said in a statement released on Friday.
"Mrs Ellemann assured me that all required environmental and safety assessments have been conducted to the satisfaction of the Danish authorities."
Burke said Australia has facilities to deal with many types of toxic waste, but they are not suited to this type of chemical, which poses "significant technical difficulties for disposal".
According to The Australian newspaper, Burke said it was agreed that the decision demonstrated the need for improving international cooperation on the handling and disposal of persistent organic pollutants (POP).
The two nations also agreed to explore options for a Danish- Australian joint global initiative to find international solutions to problems relating to stockpiles of similar toxic waste.
Earlier [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Greenpeace has protested against the shipment. Environmentalists argued that Australia should deal with the waste at home, and that shipping highly dangerous chemicals around the world poses an unacceptable risk.
