Whereupon, she left Skopje and in 1928,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], joined an Irish order – the Sisters of Loreto (now called Loretto Community). The convent was based in, Rathfarnham, Dublin, Ireland and had missionaries in Kolkata, where it was helping the poor and infirm. While she was at the commune,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she took vows of: chastity, poverty and obedience.
Mother Teresa, was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in Skopje, Macedonia, (former Yugoslavia) on August 26, 1910 – 1997.
Her devotion to the well-being of children, prompted her to establish a home for abandoned and unwanted youngsters.
The Missionaries work would culminate in the establishment of the Kalighat, the Home of the Pure Heart : Nirmal Hriday (formerly the Kalighat Home for the Dying in 1952), which was a free hospice for the sick and dying in Kolkata. It has since expanded to 19 similar homes.
During the same year, an English woman – Ann Blaikie, was so inspired by the work of the Missionaries of Charities, that she established the “Mother Teresa Committee” in England, which helped find financial donors and permanent homes for the children in the orphanages care. By the late 1960s, the Committee was so successful that Mother Teresa incorporated it into the Missionaries of Charities organization. These co-workers comprised of people of all religions and denominations. Her missionary work resulted in her being awarded two awards – the 1979 Nobel Peace

In 1929, she arrived in India and by 1931, she began teaching Catholicism at St Mary’s High School for Girls in Entally, Kolkata, where she would later became principal. But, witnessing the poor and abandoned within the region, led her to embark upon helping them. This would lead to her resigning her position at the school and, within a very short period of time, she was able to establish the Missionaries of Charity in Kalkota in 1950.
Other developments soon followed, including the Titlagrh Leprosy Center. By the 1960s, she established a new order,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], comprising of male priests – Missionary Brothers of Charity, which had the same aims of helping the destitute and poor.
It was primarily responsible for providing care for: lepers, mentally ill, prostitutes and the terminally ill and consisted of volunteers who helped with the personal and educational welfare of both the children and adults in their care.
Her family heritage and background is derived from that of Albanian descent. She lived with her father, Nicolas, mother Rosa, sister Agata and brother, Lazurus. Her father was a politician and died in 1919.
Agnes was actively involved in her local church's activities and had been very much committed to her religion, which was Catholicism. So much so, that whilst she was still in her early teens, she received a call of vocation to serve God. She was inspired by Vizjak's missionary work in Kolkata and wanted to help in some way.
At a relatively young age, in her early teens, she was inspired by a Jesuit priest’s letters – Father Anthony Vizjak. Vizjak's letters described the missionary work in Kolkata, which is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal (formerly Calcutta).
Shishu Bhavan was a children’s home that was established in 1955 by Mother Teresa. It was very much an archetypal children's home that consisted of a small number of staff and volunteers. The popularity of the home grew and soon government departments were inundating the home with lost children. The success and demand of the homes – inspired the Missionaries of Charities to expand similar homes to other regions and countries.
