The Jade Market is a good place to buy a few souvenirs, but for more serious purchases go armed with a little prior knowledge or take an expert with you.
Chinese connoisseurs have revered jade for millennia, and it is considered the most imperial of all precious stones. Thought to contain mystical properties of protection, and was often placed on the dead to ensure a long after life.

Color is the most important factor, and should be pure with no mottling. Tinges of black or yellow will reduce the value. Translucency – whether a piece is clear, opaque or muddy – is also significant,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the more translucent the better,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the more expensive. If it is clear enough to see through, then it is the most valuable. One test of jade is to try to make a scratch with a sharp instrument. If it leaves no mark, then it is real jade.
Chinese people treasure it today, and have it carved into ornaments, or worn in the form of amulets, necklaces, bracelets, and hair ornaments. Women often wear two jade bracelets, to protect themselves and their husband from harm.

The bigger eastern market is bright and busy with a large selection of jade from Burma, China, Taiwan and Australia. The stall holders have a special method of bargaining between themselves. Under a piece of newspaper, or inside their jackets, they shake hands and move their fingers indicating the sum they are asking, or are willing to pay. Nobody apart from the two people involved in the transaction knows what has been agreed. This way of “shaking hands” has been in use over 2000 years.
Hong Kong's Jade Market is in Kowloon, to the west of Nathan Road, at the junction of Kansu and Battery Streets. It was set up in 1984 and covers two adjoining sites, with around 340 and 80 stalls in the eastern and western sites respectively.
Prices range from several dollars to a few hundred thousand dollars. At the smaller western site of the market,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there are letter-writers offering a wide range of services, including Chinese calligraphy, letters in English or Chinese, and filling in application forms and tax returns. These stall operators are among the few remaining from this old trade.
Jade (yu) is actually two kinds of minerals – jadeite and nephrite. Jadeite is green, ranging from emerald to apple, or purple and clear white, and most is mined in Burma. Nephrite is also a hard stone, but less brittle and translucent than jadeite, and has been mined in China and its states for 6000 years. Colors range from milky white through shades of green, yellow or grey to opaque brown or black.
