During the time of Oliver Cromwell's protectorate, Izaak Walton moved from Stafford to the town of Clerkenwell in the county of Staffordshire, where he purchased a small estate. Here, he began to devote his time to writing. He befriended George Morley, Bishop of Worcester and formed a stewardship for him. He remarried a second time to Anne Ken in 1647 whose early death fifteen years after their marriage left him with two young children.
He followed his old friend, George Morley to Winchester where he spent the last 20 years of his life living in the Morley home where most of his writing was done. He wrote The Compleat Angler in 1653 which made the Walton name synonymous with angling and freshwater trout fishing. His affinity for the subject of fish gathered around him early anglers, historians, poets and naturalists. The Complete Angler was first published in 1653 with new editions in 1661,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 1668 and 1676. In total, there were 300 editions which made Izaak Walton a name recognized among anglers.
Izaak Walton, From Merchant To Budding Biographer
In 1633, Izaac Walton wrote an elegy that was printed with one of John Donne's poems. He befriended men like Michael Drayton and Ben Johnson and Johnson's young poet and playwright sons, who gathered at the nearby Devil Tavern for literary discussions. His marriage in 1626 to Rachel Floud aligned him with a family of religious distinction, among them Archbishop Cranmer, her uncle George Cranmer and theologian,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Richard Hooker. Rachel Floud's aunt was married to John Spenser, president of Corpus Christi College in Oxford. Fourteen years after their marriage, she died along with the seven children who had died in infancy.

Of major importance in English letters, Walton is credited with being the first professional biographer. This prestigious stature led him to play an active role in the re-establishment of the High Church. He wrote Lives which sparked an interest in biographies of the 17th century. His first biography of John Donne, at seventeen pages,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], prefaced Donne's LXXX Sermons. He also wrote The Life of Dr. Sanderson and the life of Sir Henry Wotton. Isaac Walton
In the country town of Stafford, history recorded the baptism of Izaac Walton on September 21, 1593. It may be prophetic that Stafford translate to mean "landing place". Stafford Castle had been built there by the Normans in the 1200's. Today, only the ruins remain. Stafford's most illustrious resident,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Izaac Walton, however, is remembered for his biographies. Walton was not always a writer. In the parish of St. Dunstan's-in-the-West, he was a successful merchant seamster who learned his trade from his future brother-in-law, Thomas Grinsell, a more prosperous London seamster. Izaak Walton's interest in writing began as a result of booksellers in shops near his place of business.
