apolis is the capital of the state of Maryland. It is on a little peninsula,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or arm of land,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in the Severn River, and is almost like an island. Chesapeake Bay is less than two miles away. Annapolis is more than three hundred years old. It was settled about 1648 by English Puritans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and its first name was Providence. Later the name was changed to Anne Arundel Town, and then in 1694 to Annapolis, for Anne of England, who became Queen Anne (polts, in the Greek language, means "city," so Annapolis is "Anne's city").
There are many interesting things to see in Annapolis. The most important is the United States Navel Academy, about which there is a separate article in this encyclopedia. Many people, when they say "Annapolis," mean the Naval Academy and not the city itself. Visitors may enter the Academy grounds and most of the buildings. St. John's College, for men, is also at Annapolis. It is one of the oldest colleges in America, founded in 1789, and dates back even further, because it grew out of King William College, which was founded in 1696. St. John's became famous in the 1930s by using the reading of "great books" as a basis for education. The state house in Annapolis dates back to 1772 and has seen many historic events. While the Continental Congress was meeting there, in 1783, George Washington appeared before it and handed back his commission as American commander-in-chief,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], since the Revolutionary War had been won.Named to honor the future Queen Anne of England, Annapolis literally translates to "Anne's City." All of this early town is within the designated National Historic Landmark area.
