In the new film Lexi has a male coach instead of a female skating coach. And this character of Aiden (Morgan Kelly) also takes the part of Lexi’s skating infatuation/romance, which was filled by the part of the television journalist in the original version. Aiden is also more caring and sincere than the two characters he replaced in the first film. He does want his protégé to win gold, but at the same time he is concerned about Lexi as a person, rather than simply a commodity.
And the new Lexi is more emotionally mature and more sensible than the Lexi played by Johnson. Watching Taylor skate is half of the enjoyment of this movie. She is a talented and beautiful skater,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which makes the film a must-see for anyone interested in figure skating.
The other half of the story is the actual story of Lexi Winston, who works her way to the top only to have everything taken away. But with the help of her loving family and Nick, she regains the inner strength to work her way back up to the top, even though she is basically blind.
In 1978 a little film caught the attention of movie audiences everywhere. Ice Castles is the story of an Iowa teen who lives her dream of becoming a figure skating champion, only to have it taken away after a devastating accident. She forges through her new disability to face her fears head on.
Taylor Firth plays Lexi Winston, which was played by Lynn-Holly Johnson in the original film. Taylor, like Lynn, was cast on the basis of her skating skills. The bonus feature on the DVD describes how this process was undertaken and there are interviews with the cast, director Donald Wrye (who also directed the original film), and Lynn-Holly Johnson. Rob Mayes plays Nick, Lexi’s boyfriend. In 1978 this part was played by Robbie Benson. And Michelle Kwan appears as herself.

Ice Castles is a touching, endearing, and sweet film for all ages. And although some remakes – or updated versions – do not stand up to the original films, this one definitely does.
This is a romance; a romance between Lexi and skating, and most importantly between Lexi and Nick. And in the end,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], viewers will not be disappointed with the story and the talents of this cast. This Ice Castles, like the original version, is a treasure.
In 2010 an updated version of this film tells basically the same story with most of the same characters. There are some differences,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the tone is the same and it has more appeal for today’s generation. Using many of the same songs from the original film and especially the wonderful song “Through the Eyes of Love” from Marvin Hamlisch and Carol Bayer Sager which was nominated for an Academy Award and a Golden Globe,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this score adds some modern sounds to the music that made the original film so enjoyable.
The part of Nick is more endearing in the updated version. He has his demons, but he is more grounded than the Robbie Benson character, and also more sincere.
