The Carbon Frame Mind Set
Unless you are the kind of individual who has a need for the newest and finest machine available, you are like most of the population, and you do not need a carbon bike. Carbon frames are light and stiff, but they are also fragile and expensive. Some aluminum frames are nearly as light as carbon and for the same money, can be equipped with far superior components. More riders would benefit from an aluminum frame with a top of the line drive train and wheels, than a carbon frame with entry level components. Aluminum bikes can often handle small dings and dents that don’t compromise the integrity of the frame. Carbon is not very forgiving and even the slightest dings can compromise the bike.
Carbon Bikes vs. Aluminum
A few years ago, cyclists were setting world records on these new, old stock aluminum bikes. If they were good enough for the elite two years ago, then they are good enough for the weekend warrior today. If you want a deluxe carbon frame to strap on your car and ride around the local park, or one to show off at your first triathlon, then rent one from a shop for a day or two. If an extremely efficient, reliable, durable bargain is what you are looking for to race or train on jordan 11 cool grey, then do your homework and find a non-carbon option. When you reach that stage where the benefit of carbon and its steep price tag is worth it, then by all means feel free to indulge.
Don’t be fooled by the shrewd advertising of the bike companies. Save the $5,000 bicycles for the athletes who are world class and have sponsors to support them air jordan retro 11! If you are serious about purchasing a good, light cool grey 11, reliable road or tri bike, avoid the "must have carbon" mind set. In a couple of years the carbon bike prices will come down to earth and a new frame material will arrive. Spend your money on good components and extra gear and find a bargain.
Has there ever been a better time to purchase a good triathlon or road bike? If it is possible to overcome the need to keep up with the pros and buy an ultra trendy carbon fibre bicycle, then there are some terrific deals out there on aluminum racing bikes. Not the cheap entry level machines either.
Once a buyer has determined the appropriate size for a particular brand from a local bike shop, they can search online auction sites and bike stores for their bargain cycle. Last year an aluminum triathlon bike with top of the line drive train and good wheels, was purchased for $800 less than it had been listed the previous year. The new model with the carbon frame was $1,000 dollars more, and weighed 12 ounces less. The cheaper tri bike even had a carbon rear triangle and a carbon fork. How many riders out there are going to benefit that greatly from shaving off 12 ounces? Auction sites are filled with aluminum and steel frames, and bikes that were the envy of all just two years ago!
There are some great deals on the new aluminum bikes that were top of the line a couple of years ago, but their owners just "had’ to have a new carbon bike and want to part with their old one at a very reasonable price. Even bike shops are selling their aluminum old stock at exceptional prices. These shops are often pressured to push the new products and are willing to sell very attractive older models cheaply.
