While some may dismiss this film because of its unhappy ending, this is in fact what makes the film painfully realistic and worthwhile. There are many love stories in the "real world." Some of these stories end happily, some end in divorce, some end in death and some never end, they simply fade away. (500) Days of Summer showcases a love story that exists in reality, but is rarely shown on film: a love story in which only one person falls in love and the other does not.
This film has it all: hilarious one-liners, two fantastic actors, an emotional story Air Max Lebron 8, an incredibly original narrative structure and most important of all - realism. It was a welcome surprise to see this film on the Golden Globe nominee list. Will it win? The film is up against The Hangover, It's Complicated nike airmax 95, Julie and Julia and Nine. In all honesty, a victory for (500) Days of Summer seems unlikely when put against heavy-hitters such as Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Penelope Cruz. Personally, (500) Days of Summer should be a winner. It is not often that a film so simple, yet so complex, so charming, yet so heartbreaking and so fictional, yet so realistic comes around.

(500) Days of Summer features Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Summer Finn and Tom Hansen. While the narrator claims at the beginning of the film that while it is a story of boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, it is not a love story. In a way, the narrator is correct. Summer and Tom do fall in love, or Tom thinks they fall in love, but in the end, they are not right for each other. This film does not end like every other romantic comedy out there. It ends sadly and leaves the audience heartbroken, just like Tom.
Why it Should Win
The audience watches as Tom becomes enamored with Summer. They watch as Tom and Summer date and engage in hilarious adventures. Deschanel is absolutely riveting onscreen as Summer and Gordon-Levitt captures Tom's boyish charm and naivety perfectly. It is clear throughout the film that Tom is madly in love with Summer. And while Summer seems mildly happy, it is also clear she is not as madly in love as Tom. One of the more interesting aspects of the film is how it is told. Each segment in the film is prefaced with the number of the day it occurred during Summer and Tom's relationship, such as day (252.) The events in the film do not occur chronologically air jordans 2011, but are told at random as Tom remembers them. This is a touch that makes the film even more realistic. In life, people rarely recall memories of a relationship chronologically; people remember bits and pieces of their past relationships when they are randomly triggered by current events. The audience does not know the entire story of Summer and Tom until the film is over. |
