Voodoo religion in general and voodoo dolls in particular are often thought to involve the practice of witchcraft, dark magic, and sometimes even Satanism. Voodoo dolls are frequently considered evidence that voodoo practice is sinister. After all, the term “voodoo doll” itself seems to suggest the role of this magical figurine in the voodoo belief system. However, are voodoo dolls even part of traditional voodoo practice, a religion practiced in Haiti and in various places throughout the world?
Human figurines called poppets were once used in witchcraft, folk magic, and sorcery in Western Europe. Witchcraft practitioners used poppets to cast spells. Since many people in the New World erroneously associated voodoo with witchcraft,Nike Air Max 97, the association of voodoo dolls with all voodoo practices became established in the popular imagination.

People’s misunderstandings of religious beliefs different from their own have also led to erroneous stereotypes and myths about voodoo. One example of some people’s mischaracterization of voodoo as evil was highlighted by popular Christian evangelist Pat Robertson’s comments about Haitians’ purported voodoo pact with the devil as the cause of the 2010 Haiti earthquake.
Voodoo Dolls in Popular Culture
Various pop-culture factors have helped popularize the image of a voodoo practitioner methodically sticking pins in a voodoo doll to curse, punish, inflict pain upon,Air Jordan 7, or kill another person. Hollywood horror movies have greatly promoted the association of voodoo dolls with the dark side of voodoo practice.
Interestingly,Air Max 2009, the popular conception of voodoo dolls plays no part whatsoever in religious beliefs in Haiti, where a majority of the population practices vodou. (Note, the anglicized version of the word “vodou” is “voodoo.”) Haitians, who are predominantly Christian, frequently combine voodoo practices, which originated in Africa and were brought by slaves to the New World, with Christianity.
The earliest historical evidence of the use of voodoo dolls by voodoo practitioners is from New Orleans in the early 20th century. New Orleans voodoo can be traced back to two places – Western Europe and West and Central Africa. However, the components of New Orleans voodoo that involve voodoo dolls are neither part of traditional voodoo practices nor part of Haitian religious beliefs. Today, New Orleans voodoo dolls are not much more than tourist gimmick.
